Cambrian College, established in 1967, has been the leading post-secondary institution in the Northern Ontario region. Cambrian College was founded during the creation of the college system in Ontario as a trade school. It was established originally on university grounds in Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, and Sudbury.
Till 1995, Cambrian had been a bilingual institute, providing courses in French and English. In the same year, the French curriculum was moved to Collège Boréal. In Northern Ontario, this is the largest college. It has more than 4,100 full-time students and offers 80 regular programs that suit the employment and academic aspirations of people.

Cambrian secured $3.2 million in the research income for the 2018 fiscal year. This shows a 73% up in comparison to the research income reported over the fiscal year of 2017.
