Overview
The Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film Production at Red Deer Polytechnic is a four-year degree designed to develop creative storytellers and technically skilled filmmakers. The program combines artistic expression with professional production training, allowing students to master visual storytelling across multiple genres.
Students work with industry-standard equipment in modern studio environments while collaborating with peers from other Creative Arts disciplines. Courses cover directing, cinematography, editing, sound design, screenwriting, and production management.
Hands-On Studio Learning
From storyboarding and directing actors to managing lighting setups and shaping mood through cinematography, students gain practical production experience. Sound design courses explore how audio enhances storytelling, while editing classes teach rhythm, pacing, and visual flow.
Production management training equips students with budgeting, scheduling, and leadership skills necessary for real-world film sets.
Industry Experience and Portfolio Development
In the final year, students complete an Applied Practicum, either through industry placement or a personal film project. By graduation, students build a professional portfolio showcasing short films and collaborative productions that demonstrate both creative vision and technical expertise.
